Friends - The Complete Series Collection
Friends - The Complete Series Collection A sitcom behemoth of the last 10 years, Friends shot out of the gate in 1994 with snappy writing and an attractive cast. The exploits of sensitive paleontologist Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), his obsessive-compulsive sister Monica Geller (Courteney Cox); Monica's roommate Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), a spoiled rich girl trying to live on her own; earthy aromatherapist/masseuse Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow); and Monica's neighbors across the hall-- sarcastic Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and his dim-bulb roommate Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) became a nationwide obsession, a pop-culture icon (remember "The Rachel" haircut?) and a top Nielsen hit for its entire run.

See the 10 or more seasons club .
The first two seasons were mostly centered on the on-off saga of Ross and Rachel, and while their relationship remained a strong presence through romantic rivals and even a baby,

the other characters eventually moved from sideshow players into a shared comedic lead. But Friends was not without its heart. Most of the cast had dysfunctional relationships with their parents and went through loss, divorce, marriage, parenthood, and love triangles. The emotional pregnancies of Rachel (by Ross) and Phoebe (surrogate to her half-brother's triplets) won the actresses Emmy Awards, and Joey's tender feelings for Rachel in Season 8 won LeBlanc, the most improved actor in the series, a nomination.

Most sitcoms run out of ideas by the fifth season, but Friends gave itself a refreshing jolt the minute Monica and Chandler wound up in bed together. Their budding romance was not only the one of the funniest arcs of the series, but one of the most sentimental, as they planned a wedding, struggled to have a child and eventually turned to adoption. By seasons seven and on, the characters had each "grown up" from young singletons to thirtysomethings finding permanence in their careers and love lives but never losing the laughs.

Just friends? See our guide to who kissed whom on Friends.
Friends featured a parade of celebrity guests, but unlike Will & Grace, it actually utilized most of the stars as more than cameos: The sextet's parents were all brilliantly cast, particularly Kathleen Turner as Chandler's drag-queen father and Teri Garr as Phoebe's dizzy mom. Everyone from George Clooney to Sean Penn to Julia Roberts to Bruce Willis has appeared on the sitcom, and Tom Selleck certainly enjoyed a career resuscitation after his recurring role as Monica's older man.

But no star power ever penetrated the bond between the six stars, and their unmatchable chemistry worked for 10 seasons. Even if the show is on reruns daily, this boxed set of Friends remains watchable over and over again--even if that theme song grates on your nerves.

Standout episodes include The One With All The Poker (Season 1), The One With The Birth (1), The One With the Prom Video (2), The One With the Flashback (3), The One Where Monica and Richard are Just Friends (3), The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break (3), The One With the Embryos (4), The One With All the Wedding Dresses (4), The One With the Thanksgiving Flashbacks (5), The One Where Everybody Finds Out (5), The One Where Ross Got High (6), The One With the Videotape (8), The One With the Rumor (8), The One With the Male Nanny (9), The One With Rachel's Other Sister (9), The One With Ross' Tan (10), and The One Where the Stripper Cries (10). --Ellen A. Ladies' Choice
Ladies' Choice In fact, four ladies have chosen to sing on have chosen to sing on Ladies' Choice, smooth jazz saxist Paul Taylor's latest. In order of appearance, they are LaToya London, Regina Belle, Terry Dexter, and Belle again. It makes sense that Belle gets two features: Her pop-soulful vocals bring a kind of Anita Baker intensity to the proceedings. On "How Did You Know" and "Open Your Eyes," both of which she co-wrote with the album's hitmaking producer, keyboardist Barry Eastmond (who has worked with Baker), she manages the feat of adding background vocals that contrast nicely with the lead ones. There's nothing particularly distinctive about Taylor's silky sound on alto and soprano, but the doubled-horn effects provide pop and he comes up with some distinctive effects on Vocoder. Guitarist Phil Hamilton's romantic wah-wah effects also deserve mention. --Lloyd Sachs

Microfiber Ultimate Wash Mitt
The 2-303M Microfiber Ultimate Wash Mitt is made of soft microfiber that is designed to deliver a superb wash without any scratching. This mitt can be used wet to wash or dry to dust, and traps dust unlike any other mitt. The microfiber fabric is sewn to an elastic wristband to help keep the mitt on your hand even when it is heavy with soapy water. And when the mitt gets too dirty, just throw it in the washing machine with warm water and mild detergent. Do not wash this mitt with items that give off lint. Although the 2-303M is dryer safe, do not using fabric softener or dryer sheets.

Microfiber Scrub 'N Wash Pad
The 2N1 Microfiber Scrub 'N Wash Pad features a round shape that makes washing and scrubbing a breeze. The plush microfiber side scoops and traps dust, while the strong microfiber mesh side scrubs away caked on grime and tough dirt. And when the pad gets too dirty, just throw it in the wash with warm water and mild detergent. As with many microfiber products, it is recommended that you do not wash this pad with items that give off lint. And although it is dryer safe, avoid using fabric softeners and dryer sheets.

Microfiber Waffle Towel
The 3-502 Microfiber Waffle Towel is a large, 5-foot square towel designed to scoop up wetness fast. Once your car is washed and rinsed, reach for this super-absorbent towel with the special waffle texture to get your drying job done fast. The 3-502 will not scratch, smudge, or leave behind lint. Similar to the other microfiber products, this towel can be washed in warm water with a mild detergent. Although it is dryer safe, avoid using fabric softeners and dryer sheets.

Microfiber Cleaning Towels
These microfiber cleaning towels measure approximately 12 x 16 inches each, and they're great for multiple cleaning uses on your car, truck, RV, boat, or multiple uses around the house. Thousands of tiny fibers in the cloth trap and pick up dirt and debris, and the super-soft fibers will not scratch or smear the surface. To clean, wash the towels in warm water with a mild detergent. Do not wash with other items that give off lint. Although they are dryer safe, avoid using fabric softeners and dryer sheets.

Microfiber Pocket Applicator Pads
The 9-27 Microfiber Pocket Applicator Pads are terry covered sponges designed for the easy application of protectants, waxes, stains, wood finishes and polishes to all surfaces. The 9-27 is an ideal choice for applying leather cleaners and protectants to your seats and dash, and various finishes to any interior wood accents that might need to be cleaned and shined. Each pad in this 2-pack is soft and lint-free, and can be washed and reused. To clean, wash thoroughly in warm, soapy water, then rinse, squeeze out excess water, and air dry.

Microfiber SPA Polishing Cloths
The soft, luxurious 3-508 SPA polishing cloths are just what your car needs for that last, fine-tuned polishing treatment. Each cloth in this 2-pack measures 16 x 16 inches and are designed to be safe on all surfaces. Similar to the other microfiber products, the 3-508 can be washed in warm water with a mild detergent. The Choice
The Choice #1 New York Times bestseller Nicholas Sparks turns his unrivaled talents to a new tale about love found and lost, and the choices we hope we'll never have to make.

Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life - boating, swimming , and regular barbecues with his good-natured buddies -- he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is, until Gabby Holland moves in next door.

Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage and family, THE CHOICE ultimately confronts us with the most heartwrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness
Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness

Questions for Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein

Amazon.com: What do you mean by "nudge" and why do people sometimes need to be nudged?

Thaler and Sunstein: By a nudge we mean anything that influences our choices. A school cafeteria might try to nudge kids toward good diets by putting the healthiest foods at front. We think that it's time for institutions, including government, to become much more user-friendly by enlisting the science of choice to make life easier for people and by gentling nudging them in directions that will make their lives better.

Amazon.com: What are some of the situations where nudges can make a difference?

Thaler and Sunstein: Well, to name just a few: better investments for everyone, more savings for retirement, less obesity, more charitable giving, a cleaner planet, and an improved educational system. We could easily make people both wealthier and healthier by devising friendlier choice environments, or architectures.

Amazon.com: Can you describe a nudge that is now being used successfully?

Thaler and Sunstein: One example is the Save More Tomorrow program. Firms offer employees who are not saving very much the option of joining a program in which their saving rates are automatically increased whenever the employee gets a raise. This plan has more than tripled saving rates in some firms, and is now offered by thousands of employers.

Amazon.com: What is "choice architecture" and how does it affect the average person's daily life?

Thaler and Sunstein: Choice architecture is the context in which you make your choice. Suppose you go into a cafeteria. What do you see first, the salad bar or the burger and fries stand? Where's the chocolate cake? Where's the fruit? These features influence what you will choose to eat, so the person who decides how to display the food is the choice architect of the cafeteria. All of our choices are similarly influenced by choice architects. The architecture includes rules deciding what happens if you do nothing; what's said and what isn't said; what you see and what you don't. Doctors, employers, credit card companies, banks, and even parents are choice architects.

We show that by carefully designing the choice architecture, we can make dramatic improvements in the decisions people make, without forcing anyone to do anything. For example, we can help people save more and invest better in their retirement plans, make better choices when picking a mortgage, save on their utility bills, and improve the environment simultaneously. Good choice architecture can even improve the process of getting a divorce--or (a happier thought) getting married in the first place!

Amazon.com: You are very adamant about allowing people to have choice, even though they may make bad ones. But if we know what's best for people, why just nudge? Why not push and shove?

Thaler and Sunstein: Those who are in position to shape our decisions can overreach or make mistakes, and freedom of choice is a safeguard to that. One of our goals in writing this book is to show that it is possible to help people make better choices and retain or even expand freedom. If people have their own ideas about what to eat and drink, and how to invest their money, they should be allowed to do so.

Amazon.com: You point out that most people spend more time picking out a new TV or audio device than they do choosing their health plan or retirement investment strategy? Why do most people go into what you describe as "auto-pilot mode" even when it comes to making important long-term decisions?

Thaler and Sunstein: There are three factors at work. First, people procrastinate, especially when a decision is hard. And having too many choices can create an information overload. Research shows that in many situations people will just delay making a choice altogether if they can (say by not joining their 401(k) plan), or will just take the easy way out by selecting the default option, or the one that is being suggested by a pushy salesman.

Second, our world has gotten a lot more complicated. Thirty years ago most mortgages were of the 30-year fixed-rate variety making them easy to compare. Now mortgages come in dozens of varieties, and even finance professors can have trouble figuring out which one is best. Since the cost of figuring out which one is best is so hard, an unscrupulous mortgage broker can easily push unsophisticated borrowers into taking a bad deal.

Third, although one might think that high stakes would make people pay more attention, instead it can just make people tense. In such situations some people react by curling into a ball and thinking, well, err, I'll do something else instead, like stare at the television or think about baseball. So, much of our lives is lived on auto-pilot, just because weighing complicated decisions is not so easy, and sometimes not so fun. Nudges can help ensure that even when we're on auto-pilot, or unwilling to make a hard choice, the deck is stacked in our favor.

Amazon.com: Are we humans just poorly adapted for making sound judgments in an increasingly fast-paced and complex world? What can we do to position ourselves better?

Thaler and Sunstein: The human brain is amazing, but it evolved for specific purposes, such as avoiding predators and finding food. Those purposes do not include choosing good credit card plans, reducing harmful pollution, avoiding fatty foods, and planning for a decade or so from now. Fortunately, a few nudges can help a lot. A few small hints: Sign up for automatic payment plans so you don't pay late fees. Stop using your credit cards until you can pay them off on time every month. Make sure you're enrolled in a 401(k) plan. A final hint: Read Nudge.

Review
"How often do you read a book that is both important and amusing, both practical and deep? This gem of a book presents the best idea that has come out of behavioral economics. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to see both our minds and our society working better. It will improve your decisions and it will make the world a better place."-Daniel Kahneman, Princeton University, Nobel Laureate in Economics (Daniel Kahneman )

"In this utterly brilliant book, Thaler and Sunstein teach us how to steer people toward better health, sounder investments, and cleaner environments without depriving them of their inalienable right to make a mess of things if they want to. The inventor of behavioral economics and one of the nation''s best legal minds have produced the manifesto for a revolution in practice and policy. Nudge won''t nudge you-it will knock you off your feet."-Daniel Gilbert, professor of psychology, Harvard University, Author of Stumbling on Happiness (Daniel Gilbert )

"This is an engaging, informative, and thoroughly delightful book. Thaler and Sunstein provide important lessons for structuring social policies so that people still have complete choice over their own actions, but are gently nudged to do what is in their own best interests. Well done."-Don Norman, Northwestern University, Author of The Design of Everyday Things and The Design of Future Things (Don Norman )

"This book is terrific. It will change the way you think, not only about the world around you and some of its bigger problems, but also about yourself."-Michael Lewis, author of The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game and Liar''s Poker (Michael Lewis )

"Two University of Chicago professors sketch a new approach to public policy that takes into account the odd realities of human behavior, like the deep and unthinking tendency to conform. Even in areas-like energy consumption-where conformity is irrelevant. Thaler has documented the ways people act illogically."-Barbara Kiviat, Time (Barbara Kiviat Time )

"Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein''s Nudge is a wonderful book: more fun than any important book has a right to be-and yet it is truly both."-Roger Lowenstein, author of When Genius Failed (Roger Lowenstein )

"A manifesto for using the recent behavioral research to help people, as well as government agencies, companies and charities, make better decisions."-David Leonhardt, The New York Times Magazine (David Leonhardt The New York Times Magazine )

"I love this book. It is one of the few books I''ve read recently that fundamentally changes the way I think about the world. Just as surprising, it is fun to read, drawing on examples as far afield as urinals, 401(k) plans, organ donations, and marriage. Academics aren''t supposed to be able to write this well."-Steven Levitt, Alvin Baum Professor of Economics, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and co-author of Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (Steven Levitt )

Sway: The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior
Sway: The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior

A fascinating journey into the hidden psychological influences that derail our decision-making, Sway will change the way you think about the way you think.

Why is it so difficult to sell a plummeting stock or end a doomed relationship? Why do we listen to advice just because it came from someone “important”? Why are we more likely to fall in love when there’s danger involved? In Sway, renowned organizational thinker Ori Brafman and his brother, psychologist Rom Brafman, answer all these questions and more.

Drawing on cutting-edge research from the fields of social psychology, behavioral economics, and organizational behavior, Sway reveals dynamic forces that influence every aspect of our personal and business lives, including loss aversion (our tendency to go to great lengths to avoid perceived losses), the diagnosis bias (our inability to reevaluate our initial diagnosis of a person or situation), and the “chameleon effect” (our tendency to take on characteristics that have been arbitrarily assigned to us).

Sway introduces us to the Harvard Business School professor who got his students to pay $204 for a $20 bill, the head of airline safety whose disregard for his years of training led to the transformation of an entire industry, and the football coach who turned conventional strategy on its head to lead his team to victory. We also learn the curse of the NBA draft, discover why interviews are a terrible way to gauge future job performance, and go inside a session with the Supreme Court to see how the world’s most powerful justices avoid the dangers of group dynamics.

Every once in a while, a book comes along that not only challenges our views of the world but changes the way we think. In Sway, Ori and Rom Brafman not only uncover rational explanations for a wide variety of irrational behaviors but also point readers toward ways to avoid succumbing to their pull.

"Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?": A Psychologist Explains the Development of Racial Identity
Anyone who's been to a high school or college has noted how students of the same race seem to stick together. Beverly Daniel Tatum has noticed it too, and she doesn't think it's so bad. As she explains in this provocative, though not-altogether-convincing book, these students are in the process of establishing and affirming their racial identity. As Tatum sees it, blacks must secure a racial identity free of negative stereotypes. The challenge to whites, on which she expounds, is to give up the privilege that their skin color affords and to work actively to combat injustice in society.

QBQ! The Question Behind the Question: Practicing Personal Accountability in Work and in Life
QBQ! The Question Behind the Question: Practicing Personal Accountability in Work and in Life QBQ! by John G. Miller is a motivational primer aimed at purging the "blame, complaining, and procrastination" from the workplace. Miller believes that one of the hallmarks of today's business culture is a lack of personal accountability; he prescribes the cure in this series of short stories and personal observations drawn from his years of experience running his organizational development firm. His main point is that positive change begins with individuals changing themselves: "Instead of asking, 'When will others walk their talk?' let's walk our talk first." The result is choppy (39 chapters in 115 pages), and at times Miller's advice boils down to truism and cliché. Nevertheless, managers whose workplaces demand remedial, straightforward advice should find a useful tool here. --Harry C. Edwards

Corduroy
Corduroy Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a picture of the adventures that might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation. When all the shoppers have gone home for the night, Corduroy climbs down from the shelf to look for his missing button. It's a brave new world! He accidentally gets on an elevator that he thinks must be a mountain and sees the furniture section that he thinks must be a palace. He tries to pull a button off the mattress, but he ends up falling off the bed and knocking over a lamp. The night watchman hears the crash, finds Corduroy, and puts him back on the shelf downstairs. The next morning, he finds that it's his lucky day! A little girl buys him with money she saved in her piggy bank and takes him home to her room. Corduroy decides that this must be home and that Lisa must be his friend. Youngsters will never get tired of this toy-comes-alive tale with a happy ending, so you may also want to seek out Dan Freeman's next creation, A Pocket for Corduroy. (Ages 3 to 8)

Hazzard: Choices
Hazzard: Choices Country Music As It Was Meant To Be, Refreshing indeed. With help from powerhouse band, Hazzard, singer/songwriter Dana Hazzard pens the final chapter of Yellow House history with unsurpassed maturity, insight, and that old-school country groove. A familiar face from the Stillwater-based abode that was once home to Red Dirt music demi-gods Cody Canada, Jason Boland, and Stoney LaRue, this one-time Straggler's recent effort with bandmates Mark LeMond (acoustic guitar), Christian Dean (lead & rhythm guitar), Matt Murphy (bass), and Jamie Dotson (drums) makes a welcome u-turn to country music's roots with thought-provoking lyrics, masterful melodies, and solid-gold harmony. Look for this northeastern Oklahoma band's debut, Choices, in 2008.

Choices
Choices "Choices" contains the 2005 Smooth Jazz radio hit by the same name and the previously released "Relentless" with Richard Elliot, which was until now available only on smooth jazz compilations. Featuring a remarkable cast of contemporary jazz talent, Brian Bromberg's "Choices" has been heralded as the bassist/producers best work in the genre. Eric Marienthal, Brian Culbertson, Jeff Lorber, David Benoit, Richard Elliot and Alex Acuna give Bromberg a helping hand in creating a smooth but heartfelt and iPod®-worthy collection of music.

Bromberg calls this the best contemporary jazz recording he's ever made. The hooks are memorable and infectious yet the writing is mature and substantive and the production is richly textured. As with all of Bromberg's recent recordings, no guitars were used on "Choices", although you'll swear otherwise as Brian makes the piccolo bass sing like a lead guitar.

Three Hit Albums from the U.S. Military Bands
Three Hit Albums from the U.S. Military Bands Take a look at the 1963 'Billboard' album charts, and right there alongside the hit releases by Andy Williams, Peter, Paul & Mary and Allan Sherman are not one, not two, but 'three' charting albums from U.S. military bands, all of which peaked during the month of June! Can you imagine the same thing happening today? Not even in our most patriotic moments would a military band crack the charts these days! But with this release, we harken back to a time when the strains and swells of our boys set chests-a-puffing and hearts-a-pumping, as we present three albums and 33 tracks of America's finest and their marching bands. Originally presented by the National Cultural Center (now the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts), this one ranks as perhaps our proudest 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive!

Peter & The Commissar
Peter & The Commissar With Allan Sherman's Warner Bros. albums currently off limits, we were combing the vaults looking for something else by Allan to license when we stumbled across this gem. Deemed by Sherman himself as "the most exciting night of my life," this 1964 performance at Tanglewood with the Boston Pops indeed may have represented the zenith of his career, as Sherman, with the help of orchestrator Jerry Fielding, entertained 13,000 fans with dead-on skewerings of sacred cows, musical and otherwise. 'Peter and the Commissar', for example, rewrites 'Peter and the Wolf' to depict the travails of a young songwriter whose work is rejected by authorities who think they know what the public wants, a theme that had resonance (and still does!) on both sides of the Iron Curtain. 'Variations on "How Dry I Am"', meanwhile, twists that familiar, four-note theme into endless permutations, and 'The End of a Symphony' beats P.D.Q. Bach to the punch by sending up the repetitious codas used by Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart and other great composers. This album has never been reissued on LP or CD, and for Allan Sherman fans fixated on his more famous work, it's likely to be a revelation. A 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive!

Music from Across the Way
Music from Across the Way German orchestral pop-meister James Last has sold well over 50 million albums worldwide, with 206 gold records and 17 platinum. But, would you believe that not a single one of his records is domestically available, not even these two albums, which charted here in the States in 1972 and 1975, respectively! We've ventured into the Universal vaults and emerged with these two gems, both reissued here with remastered sound and new notes featuring quotes from the man himself. Two Collectors' Choice Music exclusives!

Sylvia McNair - The Echoing Air ~ The Music of Henry Purcell / AAM, Hogwood
The stars of this recording are Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music, entertaining us with rarely-heard instrumental pieces receiving their first modern performances with the endearing poignancy inherent in Purcell's music. McNair's gracile voice and accurate, easy-going coloratura capture the lyricism of Purcell's songs, but none of the subtext's vibrant passion. Emotional variety and vocal color are lacking when she repeatedly calls for Gabriel in "Tell Me, Some Pitying Angel." Still, McNair's light and pure soprano is enjoyable in small doses. When three or four plaintiff songs are programmed back to back, however, the monotony presents a fabulous opportunity to lull insomniacs back to sleep. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Dowland: Complete Lute Works, Vol.1-5
Dowland: Complete Lute Works, Vol.1-5 Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz
