Noted English screenwriter Richard Curtis makes his directorial bow with this romantic comedy that follows the dizzying foibles of no less than a dozen couples, featuring a cast that includes Hugh Grant as a bachelor British PM and Billy Bob Thornton as a disturbing hybrid of the worst of Clinton and Bush. Seemingly taking its lead from Bridget Jones's Diary and its sequel (both of which Curtis also wrote), Love's rich, eclectic collection of pop songs becomes something more than mere movie-soundtrack wallpaper. Indeed, tracks as disparate as Joni Mitchell's hauntingly autumnal remake of "Both Sides Now" and the Pointer Sisters' effusive '80s hit "Jump" function somewhere between supporting player and narrative Greek chorus. It's a mature, often introspective collection that mixes the expected chestnuts (the Beach Boys' evergreen "God Only Knows") and covers (Eva Cassidy's stately version of Christine McVie's "Songbird," an R&B-infused take of "All You Need Is Love" by Lynden David Hall) with standout work from Norah Jones (a torched-up "Turn Me On"), Texas (the Dusty Springfield-esque dramatics of "I'll See It Through"), and Wyclef Jean's joyous "Take Me As I Am." Sergei Prokofiev's most popular opera is a swift-moving romp through a flimsy fairy tale of a king cured by laughter who magically pursues three oranges, from one of which emerges the lovely Princess Ninetta. Evil plots and machinations run through the farce, all of which is set to brilliantly orchestrated music. Written in 1919, the opera is frankly iconoclastic; Prokofiev mocked traditional aria-laden operas and pursued a modernism whose shock value is muted today, but whose inventiveness continues to fascinate. The nature of his chosen idiom, though, means listeners shouldn't expect many hummable tunes beyond the popular march. Much of the opera's success lies in stagings that exploit the limitless possibilities of the fairy-tale setting. Beyond its glittery surface, the opera's irony and mockery of the pretentious have contemporary relevance. Valery Gergiev leads a zestful performance, brimming with sparkling wit. The key roles of the king and his newfound beloved are well sung by Akimov and Netrebko, and the chorus and orchestra are first-rate, though the singing of some of the lesser roles is variable. Love Changes Everything: The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection, Vol. 2
The most surprising track on this collection isn't hidden between blockbusters selections from the blockbuster Lloyd Webber songbook but is located in plain view right at the beginning of the CD. The previously unreleased "Probably on Thursday" was originally written as a pop song in 1967 and indeed sounds very much like a forgotten gem by an obscure 1960s pop singer. It's absolutely delightful and the last thing you'd expect from a composer best known for neoclassical bombast. Another surprise is another previously unreleased song, this one from Sunset Boulevard: "The Perfect Year" is a sweet ballad, and Brightman smartly doesn't oversell it. In fact, the CD decidedly emphasizes the singer's more subtle side rather than her vocal pyrotechnics---"Make Up My Heart" from Starlight Express and "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar are particularly nice. The cache of previously unreleased songs also includes guest apperances by the likes of Michael Ball ("Seeing Is Believing") and John Barrowman ("Too Much in Love to Care"), but there's never any doubt as to who the star of this CD is. The most surprising track on this collection isn't hidden between blockbusters selections from the blockbuster Lloyd Webber songbook but is located in plain view right at the beginning of the CD. The previously unreleased "Probably on Thursday" was originally written as a pop song in 1967 and indeed sounds very much like a forgotten gem by an obscure 1960s pop singer. It's absolutely delightful and the last thing you'd expect from a composer best known for neoclassical bombast. Another surprise is another previously unreleased song, this one from Sunset Boulevard: "The Perfect Year" is a sweet ballad, and Brightman smartly doesn't oversell it. In fact, the CD decidedly emphasizes the singer's more subtle side rather than her vocal pyrotechnics---"Make Up My Heart" from Starlight Express and "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar are particularly nice. The cache of previously unreleased songs also includes guest apperances by the likes of Michael Ball ("Seeing Is Believing") and John Barrowman ("Too Much in Love to Care"), but there's never any doubt as to who the star of this CD is. Donizetti - L'Elisir d'Amore
It would be hard to imagine a better performance of Donizetti's comic masterpiece. If there was one role that ideally suited Luciano Pavarotti's voice and stage personality, it was Nemorino, the impoverished and not-very-bright peasant who worships the village's prettiest and richest young woman from a distance, is swindled by a traveling vendor of "miracle" medicines, but wins her hand by dumb luck. The story has comedy, pathos, and a put-down of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde (or at least the Tristan story) written long before Wagner composed it.

Kathleen Battle is not only a wonderful singer and convincing actress; as Adina, she is pretty enough to make Nemorino's infatuation totally credible. Juan Pons struts convincingly as Belcore, Nemorino's self-important rival, and Enzo Dara is properly spectacular as Dr. Dulcamara, who sells Nemorino the magic potion guaranteed to improve his love life, or at least to get him drunk. The melodies in this opera include some of the best ever written, and James Levine, his extraordinary orchestra, and his wonderful chorus know exactly what to do with them. Everything comes together in this production to make it one of the best opera DVDs available. --Joe McLellan
