Composed of winners of talent contests and the star of the Scandinavian film Adam and Eve, the Swedish quartet Play strut the kind of girl power not seen since the emergence of the Spice Girls. But it may not be evident from their music, which is generic, synth-laden Europop buffed with slick R&B beats and polished harmonies occasionally marked by flashes of charm ("Disco Hippie"). No wallflowers sitting at home pining after the boy next door, the girls champion independence, self-reliance, and pride on tracks like "Us Against the World," "Cinderella," and "I Don't Get Down Like That." Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine

The Knee Plays were commissioned in 1985 by avant-garde theatre director Robert Wilson for his 12-hour opera, CIVIL warS. David Byrne was one of six composers hand-selected for the opera, and his interludes were the joints between the larger acts. CIVIL warS was never performed in its entirety, but The Knee Plays did just that in various U.S. and European cities. The brass stars in this show, on both the rhythm and melody fronts, yet most of the songs mope along like a funeral march when they aren't providing dramatic tension. For all of Byrne's heady explorations, the man has an ample populist streak, and one needn't comprehend this music so much as merely sit back and enjoy it. In his peculiar deadpan, Byrne speaks in several pieces: a geeky, meticulous parsing of our daily the minutia (getting dressed, grocery shopping, writing letters, etc.). Subtly droll observational humor (or implicit criticism) reigns, just as Byrne fans expect. In treating The Knee Plays to their first release on CD, Nonesuch adds eight instrumental versions and a bonus DVD, featuring the original 57-minute theatrical performance as a slideshow with music. In all, it's an unearthed essential for Byrne fans. --Jason Pace
