For better or worse, MTV funded a bumbling case of idiots to play with poo and dress in a variety of men's undergarments. Never before has arrested development looked so much fun as the cast of Jackass make it. From stapling Jackass on their rear-end to mounting magazine stands in gorilla costumes, Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the gang show us what it takes be a Jackass!UMD for PSP: Closed-captioned, ColorThis item is BRAND NEW and factory fresh (sealed if applicable). Spike Lee's films have raised a multitude of questions about cinema, from attempts to outline the nature, or "essence," of a black cinematic aesthetics, to a revisioning of American film as a whole. They have sparked critical inquiries into the nature of genres, the role of the auteur, and the mechanics of an active text and an oppositional spectatorship. They have asked us to reconsider spectatorial pleasure; to revel in their polyphonic visual and aural fields. They consider not only race, but also the often blurred interconnections among race, gender, sexuality, and class. In short, they have encouraged, and, in some cases, forced us to interact with what's on screen and, perhaps more importantly, with each other, whether it be in the theater, the cafe, the classroom, or the street corner. Taken together, the essays in "The Spike Lee Reader" will spark dialogue and encourage a continuing consideration of the depth and complexity of Spike Lee's career. Contributors include Christine Acham, Toni Cade Bambara, Mark D Cunningham, Anna Everett, Krin Gabbard, Ed Guerrero, Bell Hooks, Michele Wallace and many others.Paperback: 312 pages

He s BACK!!! VCI is proud to announce the second volume of Burke s Law which will complete the award-winning inaugural season. Burke s Law was a detective series that ran on ABC from 1963 to 1965. Gene Barry starred as Amos Burke the suave millionaire Chief of Detectives for Los Angeles, who was chauffeured around to solve crimes in his Silver Cloud II Rolls-Royce. The series featured stylish settings, strange twists on homicides, and legendary guest stars. During the opening credits, as the opening title burst on screen, and a woman s voice was heard seductively saying It s Burke s Law! The title also reflected Burke s practice of providing wisdom ... A smart policeman never mixes business with vermouth - Burke s Law. Each episode had the title Who Killed... followed by the victims name. The opening of the show revealed the murder, but not the murderer (that was left for Captain Burke to discover.) The show would use a blend of wit and drama, as Burke would sort through a suspicious assortment of shady characters. Each suspect was questioned by Captain Burke and his fellow detectives, Rookie Detective Tim Tilson (played by Gary Conway) and Sergeant Lester Hart (played by Regis Toomey), until the guilty party was identified. Atlanta's Morehouse College has long been revered as a leading academic institution, and as an all-male, historically African American institution, it has been viewed as a shaper of American black leaders, including perhaps its most notable graduate, Martin Luther King Jr. In this video, Morehouse is viewed through the eyes of its students during the 1993-94 academic year, and their year at Morehouse is seen to be an experience in character and spiritual development as much as an exercise in academic endeavor. Footage shot during a fall "spirit night," a late-night ritual to promote bonding among the student body, sets the tone for the video, which features interviews with Morehouse professors as well as notable grads filmmaker Spike Lee and Olympic gold medallist Edwin Moses. Profiles of specific students show their development through the course of the school year, and the mystique of being a "Morehouse Man," as opposed to merely a Morehouse graduate, is explored in this intelligent examination of the character of this incredible educational institution. --Robert J. Based on the best-selling novel and with screenplay by James McBride, Miracle at St. Anna is a visually monumental film about a group of Buffalo soldiers who find themselves behind enemy lines in Italy during World War II. Filmed mostly in lush Tuscan countryside, with cinematography by Matthew Libatique (Requiem for a Dream) and still photography by David Lee (Malcolm X, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) these 100 plus images capture the magic and intensity of this story about redemption and triumph over the bleakest of experiences. Including costume designs, storyboard sketches, text by the director himself, a full script book, and archival material from the second World War, Miracle at St. Anna: The Motion Picture, is not only a visual tribute to this epic, but also to the countless African American soldiers who risked their lives for a country in which they were treated with less respect than the enemy they were fighting.Author: Spike Lee

Spike Lee wrote, directed and starred in She's Gotta Have It, the independent-film success story of 1986. Shot on a shoe-string budget of $175,000 in black-and-white 16mm, the film was made with Spike Lee's persistence and talent plus the help of family and friends. It grossed $8 million at the box office and proved to be a major hit with both critics and audiences. Now Spike Lee reveals how he did it, mapping out the entire creative and production processes-from early notebook jottings to film festival awards. Spike Lee's Gotta Have It is a unique document in film literature - it's funny, absorbing, and fresh as the hit film itself.Author: Spike Lee

"...You got Slayer problems. You know what I find works real good with Slayers? Killing them." "Oh yeah, I did a couple Slayers in my time. Don't like to brag. Oh, who am I kidding, I love to brag. There was one Slayer, during the Boxer Rebellion..." "We like to talk big, vampires do. 'I'm gonna destroy the world,' -- just tough-guy talk, strutting around with your friends over a pint of blood...Truth is, I like this world. You got dog racing, Manchester United, Love Boat, and you got people. Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs..." In the second hardcover installment of the bestselling Buffy the Vampire Slayer- series, Christopher Golden, coauthor of The Watcher's Guide ("fans will suck this tome dry" -- Entertainment Weekly) and Immortal ("Golden and Holder smartly expand upon the show's slangy lingo [and] display deep insight into the characters." -- Entertainment Weekly), presents a unique supernatural tale that finds fan-favorite demon lovers Spike and Drusilla wreaking havoc throughout war-torn Europe as only they can. As long as there have been demons, there have been Slayers. But Slayers have short life expectancies and high mortality rates. Which is why there exists a list of Pretty Maids All in a Row It's 1940, and Europe is ravaged by World War II -- an ideal environment for two gleefully destructive monsters. Drusilla's birthday -- that is, the anniversary of her resurrection as a vampire -- impends and her devoted paramour Spike wants to celebrate in style. What more perfect a gift than the legendary necklace known as Freyja's Strand -- a chain of metal so potently magical that it instantly imbues its wearer with the ability to shape-shift at will? The problem is, no one's sure that the bauble even exists. Until Spike learns of a demon named Skrymir, who claims not only to possess the necklace, but is willing to trade. Skrymir's true desire is to be rid of the most persistent thorns in his side, the Watchers' Council and the Slayer, so that he can implement his vision of world domination. Spike's task is to infiltrate Council head-quarters and get his hands on the list of all young women currently in training to take over as Slayer should they be called. In exchange for the necklace, Spike must kill the current Slayer, a brazen young woman named Sophie, as well as all of the Slayers-in-Waiting that exist -- the "pretty maids all in a row." To Spike, this sounds like fun, and he sets off on a spree. Sophie and her Watcher, Yanna, are determined to stop whoever has been slaughtering all of the potential Slayers. If Spike and Drusilla succeed with their plans of bloodlust and power, it could mean the end of the Chosen One -- all of the Chosen Ones -- forever...Author: Christopher Golden

Spike Lee rises again. This time, he and Lisa Jones document his transition from struggling independent to mainstream filmmaker with the making of the Columbia Pictures film, School Daze. No longer working with a small cast and a painfully tight budget, Spike Lee and his crew find themselves working in a swirl of university politics, a cast of thousands, big musical production numbers and the not-insignificant pressures of coming up with a hit in the majors. He "uplifts the race" by demystifying the process of producing an entertaining commercial film that, at the same time, delivers a stinging - yet funny - critique on American culture.Author: Spike Lee

On October 20, 2001, this now-historic concert took place at Madison Square Garden, a mere six weeks after the horrific terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Thousands of firefighters, police officers, survivors, families, and fans witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime event as, in the space of nearly six hours, many legendary musical performers donated their time and their talent to one of the greatest causes ever, in the process giving their audience an unforgettable burst of pure emotion. Organized by Sir Paul McCartney, the Concert for New York City was an overwhelming experience that deserves to be saved for posterity. The two-CD audio recording is crammed with dozens of superb performances but doesn't give a sense of the whole show that this two-DVD set certainly does. Not only can we relive such seminal performers from that evening as the Who, David Bowie, John Mellencamp, and Sir Paul himself, we can see the charming and personal short films made for the occasion by such New York filmmakers as Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese, or the dozens of celebrities and unsung firefighters and police officers who immortalized that day with their stories and musical introductions.
There is one quibble: the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris," one of the blues standards Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy played, and McCartney's "From a Lover to a Friend" and "Lonely Road" are all missing, which seems curious, considering that the entire show could have easily fit onto two DVDs. So don't erase that videotape you made of the concert the night it aired, because that remains the definitive version. But this DVD (with very good Dolby 5.1 surround sound) comes close. --Kevin Filipski

My new cd, "The Very Thing That You Treasure" was recorded and mixed entirely in Brooklyn. Basic tracking was done in my home (renamed "The Leaky Worth Recording Studio" for the occasion) when my roomate was out of town (we liked the sound of the high ceilings-and Red's studio wasn't soundproofed yet), on mondays, tuesdays, and wednesdays (my nights off from work). After recording practically all the music, a voice problem caused almost a year delay before we could continue tracking and mixing the record at Red's (that's Adam Lasus to you) great new studio "Fireproof". It features many of the coolest (and bestest) musicians in (and out of) town, including guitarist/mandolinist Jon Graboff (he also plays a lot of Fender Bass VI on the record), Mark Spencer (of Blood Oranges,Freedy Johnston, Jay Farrar etc. fame- he plays organ, resonator guitar and tambourine), bassists Scott Yoder (he's played with Kevin Salem, Tandy and he looks a lot like Keifer Sutherland) and Danny Weinkauf (currently in They Might Be Giants). The drummers are percussion genius Brian Doherty (Freedy, Silos , TMBG's 1st ever drummer-he replaced the machine!), Thomas Goss (Richard Barone/Jack Bruce) and the since retired Steve Judd. Also lending their instrumental talents are, cellist-to-the-stars Jane Scarpantoni (everybody), mellotronist Dean Falcone (formerly of The Excerpts-he also plays a mean leslie-ized guitar) and NYC's king of the keys Joe McGinty (Loser's Lounge/Psychedelic Furs).
The songs are a grab bag of things i've written over the years-some of recent vintage, some quite a bit older. I tried to strike a balance between happy/sad, country/city and mellow/rockin' while still keeping everything firmly in pop mode.
