Jazz trumpeter Brad Goode relocated to Colorado but maintains his strong Chicago ties by performing here once or twice a year. He was an important figure in Chicago, leading the house band at The Green Mill for a dozen years, and made a number of appearances at The Jazz Showcase with Joe Henderson, Eddie Harris, Lee Konitz, James Moody, Red Rodney and Ira Sullivan. Goode is pleased with the results of this session, which, due to a scheduling glitch, wound up only taking two and one half hours in the recording studio. That helped add spontaneity, a live feeling, to the proceedings. He was particularly interested here in "working with elements of abstraction within standard forms."

With some trivial exceptions, mostly piano rolls, this disc compiles Prokofiev's complete recordings as a pianist. It's a pity there are so few of them, but we are fortunate to have any. The composer's brilliance in his own popular Third Piano Concerto has never been surpassed, not even by such contemporary virtuosi as Argerich and Toradze. The way he tosses off the showers of rushing chords just before the end of the last movement is a typical illustration of Prokofiev's amazing pianism. Even the sluggish playing of the LSO under the direction of Coppola, a company hack from French EMI, doesn't diminish the value or the thrills of this performance. The selection of piano music, brief as it is, reveals the contrasting facets of Prokofiev's style, and his playing reflects moods from the sarcastic brilliance of Suggestion diabolique to the touching poignance of the slow movement from the Fourth Piano Sonata. Superbly transferred by Mark Obert-Thorn, this listenable and compelling disc is a model of what historical reissues should be in both content and presentation. --Leslie Gerber

Russian piano music is presented and performed brilliantly here by Russian pianist ANDREI GAVRILOV on this compilation of EMI Classics recordings made in 1977 and 1979 at Abbey Road Studios in London. The Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of Riccardo Muti and the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Simon Rattle play the first piano concertos of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Sergei Prokofiev with Gavrilov in the first part of the program with delightful intensity and fire. The main theme of the Tchaikovsky concerto is one of his most well known and has become quite famous even in pop culture. From the first notes played, most will recognize this very romantic and dramatic piece of music. Though lesser well know, Prokofiev's first piano concerto demonstrates Gavrilov's mastering of the instrument as the work immediately takes off into a flight of ecstasy from the very beginning that only the most accomplished pianists can realize. The program is! followed by 3 shorter in length solo piano pieces by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Mily Balakirev. "Islamey" composed by Balakirev (referred to often as the founding father of the Russian composers) is often heard in its orchestral version but this solo piano recording offers the same fire and dancing spirit that many conductors conjure from the large orchestra.
